Government to attack false furloughing claims
The government have rushed through legislation to give HMRC new ‘draconian’ powers to reclaim hundreds of millions in Covid-19 support payments effectively allowing HMRC to go after those who have broken the rules to obtain Coronavirus support payments.
Where HMRC believes that businesses, companies or sole traders, did not qualify for the recent bailouts or broke the strict rules, they could face a massive 100% tax charge or might face criminal prosecution if they do not pay up.
HMRC officers are preparing to claw back millions in falsely claimed furlough or grant payments.
HMRC is expected to look out for businesses that did not pass on the full furlough payment to staff, and those that are subsequently found to have traded profitably without the need for the Government bailout.Share
