HMRC Investigation – Guilty until proved innocent

Posted by:

Why you must take the urgent advice of a specialist if you receive a letter from the Taxman!

Even to innocent taxpayers, an enquiry letter from HMRC causes feelings of fear and the clients always tell me they cannot sleep for the worry and feeling they have been found guilty before being allowed to prove themselves innocent.

People firmly believe they must hand over everything to HMRC just because they have requested it.

In fact I have trouble sometimes convincing a client that they do not have to do so because believe me HMRC operates on the principle of “if you don’t ask, you don’t get”.

So always stand back take a breath and certainly do not ring them as soon as you receive the letter! They will take the opportunity to question you and you may easily tell them things they so no need to know for say periods outside of the enquiry or are incorrect in your panic.

The more information you give, the more HMRC have to go on and spread their net wider.

Take advice my first call is free so nothing ventured nothing gained!
