Professional footballers foot the bill for tax rises!
Image rights under the attack
The 2017 budget says:
“The government is aware that some employers pay image rights in respect of employees under separate contractual arrangements to employment income.
HMRC will publish guidelines for employers who make payments of image rights to their employees to improve the clarity of the existing rules”.
Back in December, we were already aware emerged that more than 40 football players are under investigation by the tax authorities over payments for image rights.
The current rules allow them treat image rights as a separate income stream, and potentially have it taxed overseas if the player spent much of their career abroad.
